Forests and Woods of Cumbria
Cumbria's forests are both natural and man-made. They serve as habitat for wildlife and recreation for people. In the past their wood was used extensively and much land was cleared, altering the natural high landscape of mixed oak, pine, and birch. Valleys were once filled in with alder and sedges. 5000 years of use has changed their makeup.
