Grasmere Lake

Grasmere Lake 1 mile in length 0.5 mile in width and 75^ft in depth, joined to Rydal Water by the Rothay river, lies in the vale of the Rothay. Bracken-covered fells rise up from the lake shores.

Wordsworth and his sister, Dorothy, often fished on Grasmere Lake and enjoyed picnics on its island. Visitors can still hire boats and row around the lake, but the island is in private hands.

There are many walks in the area, some popularized by the Wordsworths. They lived at Dove Cottage, across from the lake from December 1799 to May 1808. Wordsworth referred to it as 'The most loveliest spot than man hath found'.

Grasmere Lake is located by the village of Grasmere on the A591.
