Wet Sleddale
Wet Sleddale is a reservoir,
not a true lake. Like Haweswater it was constructed to supply Manchester with a supply of fresh
water. The valley in which it is located once belonged to Shap Abbey.
Surrounded by moorlands and the high fells, it is supplied with water from the
surrounding becks, rivers, and peaty land. Its name is appropriate for the amount of rainfall in the
area. Public access to the reservoir is by footpath. No activities are allowed on the lake.
Wet Sleddale is off the A6, follow signs to Thorney Bank, then branch left
crossing the River Lowther to parking spot.
