Arnside and Silverdale AONB

(Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty)

Arnside Silverdale AONB Headquarters by TheButlerThe Arnside/Silverdale AONB is situated at the head of Morecambe Bay and lies in both Cumbria and Lancashire.

The particularly valuable habitats in the area are those of the grasslands, the ash, oak, and hazel woods, limestone pavements, mossland, reedbed lagoons, intertidal sand flats, and salt marshes.

The sand flats and salt marshes are used by over-wintering birds that include rare and protected species, among them the bittern and the marsh harrier. The high brown fritillary butterfly frequents the area also.Arnside Estuary by Thebutler

15 SSSIs (Sites of Special Scientific Interest) lie in this AONB. Gait Barrows National Nature Reserve is one of them. A large variety of flowering plants enrich the area.

There are walk leaflets available for the area. Contact Countryside Management Service or Arnside/Silverdale AONB Landscape Trust both located at Old Station Building, Arnside, Cumbria LA5 0HG. Tel/Fax: 01524 761034
