Newton Reigny Nature Reserve

(See also Newton Reigny)

Newton Reigny nature reserve (Site of Special Scientific Interest) is a .3 ha basin mire owned by the Cumbria Wildlife Trust. Permission is needed to visit by non-members. The reserve is wet with many ditches so special care is needed when visiting. In the past peat was cut from the land by local families.

A large variety of plants grow in the calcium rich water. These include black bog-rush, great fensedge, greater spear-wort, and various species of willow.

Newton Reigny Nature Reserve is accessed from the village of Newton Reigny, 2.5 miles north-west of Penrith.
