Solway Coast Discovery Centre

(See also Silloth)

Silloth Solway Marsh and Tourist Information Building by Barbara BallardThe Solway Coast Discovery Centre in Silloth, Cumbria gives visitors the chance to discover the geography of the Solway coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). Visitors can see how the Romans, Vikings and medieval monks developed the area and find out about the diverse natural habitat of the region. Archaeological sites are also highlighted in the Discovery Centre.

The Solway Coast was designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) in 1964 on the recommendation of the Countryside Commission. The designated area stretches from Rockcliffe east of Carlisle to the sea brows north of Maryport and covers an area of approximately 44.5 square miles. The area is internationally important for bird life and has a diversity of plant and animal habitats. On the website are details of nature walks, animal habitats, and the archaeology of the region.
