The Solway Coast Discovery Centre in
Silloth, Cumbria gives visitors the chance to discover the geography of the Solway coast Area of
Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). Visitors can see how the Romans, Vikings and medieval monks
developed the area and find out about the diverse natural habitat of the region. Archaeological
sites are also highlighted in the Discovery Centre.
The Solway Coast was designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) in
1964 on the recommendation of the Countryside Commission. The designated area stretches from
Rockcliffe east of Carlisle to the sea brows north of Maryport and covers an area of
approximately 44.5 square miles. The area is internationally important for bird life and has a
diversity of plant and animal habitats. On the website are details of nature walks, animal
habitats, and the archaeology of the region.
