Whinlatter Pass

Whinlatter Pass, winding its way through the Thornthwaite Forest, sits 1,043 feet above sea level with views over Bassenthwaite Lake. At the foot of the pass lies the small village of Braithwaite, straddling Coledale Beck. At the other end of the pass are the villages of High Lorton and Low Lorton. Comb Bridge and Scawgill Bridge are on the route.

The pass, from the Vale of Keswick to the Vale of Lorton, is as popular today for viewing the beauty of the Lake District as it was in the days of wagon travel. Even the Romans used the pass through the mountains. The road has few steep gradients so is not a difficult drive. Beside the pass road stands the Whinlatter Forest Visitor Centre with an exhibition and forestry trails.
