Blelham Tarn

Blelham Tarn by Tony RichardsThis small tarn is off a minor road via the B5286 on the western shore of Windermere between Hawkshead and Ambleside. It is approximately 25 acres in area and up to 47 feet deep. Roach, perch, pike, eels, and brown trout inhabit its waters. A boathouse provides a perch for fishermen.

Blelham Tarn by Tony RichardsBlelham is fringed with reed beds that make the western shore out-of-bounds. During the summer visitors will see a large amount of blue-green algae on the tarn's surface due to a lack of oxygen in its depths. It's a non-touristy sheltered spot.
