Popular Lakes Get Their Own New ‘Guide’

New user-friendly colourful leaflets designed to enable visitors to get the best enjoyment out of the national park's most popular lakes – Windermere, Ullswater, Derwentwater, and Coniston – have just been published in time for the peak summer holiday period.

The free leaflets, all containing detailed easy-to-follow maps of the individual lakes, give advice on topics such as boating activities, lakeshore walks, stunning viewpoints, car parks, public transport availability, places to eat, and toilets.

In addition to generic safety advice about swimming, boating and fishing, each leaflet has a dedicated section illustrating what visitors can do to help protect the specific environment of the four lakes while still enjoying their dramatic locations.

“Windermere, Ullswater, Coniston and Derwentwater are all very different lakes, each with a unique character. But the one thing they do have in common is their popularity – with millions of people using them every year,” said LDNPA publication co-ordinator Charlotte Crosby.

“We want to help all these visitors enjoy our lakes even more, while at the same time respecting the area's wildlife and environmentally sensitive locations, and encouraging the use of the extensive public transport facilities available,” she added.

The 120,000 leaflets will available at information centres, tourist attractions, and online at www.lakedistrict.gov.uk
