The People of Cumbria
Cumbria's famous people are of a diverse nature. The county has a strong literary heritage: William Wordsworth, Beatrix Potter, Arthur Ransome, Alfred Wainwright, and others. Well-known historic figures range from Adam Sedgwick, the father of modern geology, to Catherine Parr, wife of Henry VIII. Entertainers such as Stan Laurel of Laurel and Hardy fame have made their mark. Canon Hardwicke Rawnsley, founder of the National Trust, was a Cumbrian.
