Abbeys Monasteries and Churches

Although some of Cumbrias country churches were built in Saxon times, little of the church masonry of that period remains except for parts that have been incorporated into Norman churches that date from around 1130-1200. Over the centuries many of the parish churches were extended, rebuilt, or renovated in various styles popular at the time. Cumbria is home to Carlisle cathedral and several abbeys and priories. In addition to those listed here, our town and village pages give information about local places of worship.
