Aquarium of the Lakes
The Aquarium of the Lakes, redeveloped in Feb. 2002, is a multi-level
freshwater attraction at Lakeside on the southern shore of Lake Windermere. The more than 30
displays use the latest technology and are set up to follow a river from its felltop beginning to
its end in Morecambe Bay. Each area-mountain stream, river, lake, seashore, and bay-is decorated
with Lake District murals and uses sound effects.
Wildlife in and around the lake are part of the largest collection of freshwater
fish in the UK. Visitors will see otters, sharks, rays, and pike among the living attractions. A
sunken shipwreck gives panoramic views into the aquarium's Lake Windermere tank.
The new cinema attraction provides an audio-visual trip above and below the
surface of Lake Windermere. Other new interactive displays include plasma screens, a miniature
working waterwheel, and a miniature lighthouse.
