Cumberland Bird of Prey Centre
The Centre houses hawks, falcons, owls, vultures,
and buzzards. An unusual species at the Centre is a Falkland Island caracara. The aviaries and
grounds are set in three acres of woodland that contain wild areas for local flora and fauna as
well as garden areas.
On the Hawk Lawn birds are set out on traditional blocks and bow perches.
Falconry equipment is available for inspection. Daily demonstrations consist of
flying displays and commentary about the birds and their behaviour including information about
habitat, conservation, lifestyle, and traits.
In the winter months hawking days (10am-4.30pm)
are offered where guests are driven to the centres hunting grounds and get to carry and recall
one of the Harris hawks. These days are for the energetic only. Less strenuous are the hawk walks
in the surrounding woodland, when visitors can hold and fly one of the Harris hawks.
There are five day courses that cover all aspects of keeping, caring for, and flying a Harris hawk. The information learned in the course
provides the grounding and expertise to choose a bird, furnish it, man it, and train and fly it
free. Participants are taught how to make their own equipment, given guides on aviary design,
perch types, weathering, and mews specification. They are shown how to repair feathers, trim
beaks, restrain a bird safely, and other aspects of keeping a bird.
A shorter two day course is offered
as a hands-on introduction to falconry. Activity days are fun days where students handle many
different species of birds of prey. Emphasis is on fun rather than learning to keep birds.
Contact the centre by phone for details on these courses. You can also register
for these courses on their website.
