Eden Ostrich World
(See also Langwathby)
Eden Ostrich
World is part of a Farm Visitor Centre of 500 acres. African Black ostriches are the main
attraction.
The African Black ostrich had its beginning as a commercial enterprise when the
ostriches in Timbuktu were discovered to have a perfect feather (ostrich feather plumes being the
fashion vogue in the late 1800's.) The 150 birds were smuggled to South Africa and bred with the
South African country's native ostrich. Thus the highly prized South Africa black was born.
As time progressed, only the most even-tempered birds with good feathers were
retained for breeding purposes. After the demise of the ostrich feather as a fashion statement,
the industry focussed on leather and meat.
Selective breeding produced an excellent heavy-bodied bird for commercial purposes. Black
African birds are not necessarily South African birds whose export is illegal.
Ostrich chicks can be observed hatching from May to October.
Rare breeds of cattle, horses, donkeys, shire horses, pigs, goats, red deer, ducks, and geese are
added attractions. A zebroid (cross between a pony and a zebra)
born in the summer of 2001 is a special treat. A walk along the Eden River is available for
visitors to enjoy.
Eden Ostrich World is located five miles east of Penrith on the A686 at Langwathby Hall Farm
