Muncaster Owl Centre and World Owl Trust
(See also Muncaster Castle and Ravenglass)
Muncaster Castle is home to
the Owl Centre and headquarters of the World Owl Trust. Its a centre for breeding endangered
species. The World Owl Trust works on a global basis to help preserve endangered species by
captive breeding and release schemes, monitoring nest sites and putting up nest boxes, and
supporting groups and governments with advice. They also advise landowners on habitat
creation.
On site at Muncaster are more than 200 owls from 45 species and
subspecies from all over the world. The largest species, the European Eagle Owl, and the
smallest, the Pygmy are on view. Some of the other species include the Barn, Ural, Spectacled,
Milky Eagle, Brown Fish, Burrowing, and Snowy. The Laybourn Aviary houses all of the British
species living as one group.
Video cameras are placed in some of the nesting boxes,
allowing visitors a close-up peek at the owls. An exhibition includes pictures, videos, and
displays. "Meet The Birds" takes place each afternoon at 2:30 when several of the owls are
brought to the front lawn of Muncaster Castle and a talk and flying demonstration (weather
permitting) are given. An owl shop sells owl mementos. People can adopt a bird and support the
work of the charity by becoming Owl Trust members.
