South Lakes Wild Animal Park
(See also Dalton-in-Furness)
The 14-acre
South Lakes Wild Animal Park is a center for conservation, breeding, and education. It has more
than one hundred species of animals located in the park according to which continent they come
from. Some examples are white rhinoceros, giraffe, and cheetah from Africa. From Australia come
kangaroos, emu, and wallabies. Rare animals at the park include the red panda, maned wolves, and
tamarins. There are a number of types of birds, many wandering free. Parrots, pheasants, and
waterfowl make their presence known.
The Park is a tiger
conservation centre for the rare Amur and Sumatran tigers. The Amur Tiger is the largest of the 5
remaining sub-species of tiger while the Sumatran is the smallest. Go at feeding time to see the
tigers climb a tree to get their food.
A farm area and
petting corner for children as well as a miniature railway and adventure playground make for a
full day of fun.
New things to see in 2007 will include an Andean bear breeding facility, new
tamarin environments, mongoose habitat, new water features and more elevated walkways including a
new view of the African lions.
