Gleaston Watermill
(See also Gleaston and Gleaston Castle)
The historic corn water mill at Gleaston was built in the
14th century and restored in 1774. The present mill machinery dates from that time and
is in working order. The restored machinery and 18 foot in diameter timbered waterwheel with its
wooden gears operates on most days. The 11th century watercourse was man-made. Remains
of prehistoric man were found close by.
The country store, Pig's Whisper, sells a variety of items from jams to handwork
to specialty items for pig lovers. A cafe/restaurant, Dusty Miller's, was once a cow shed. It
serves food made on the premises. There's an apiary and self-catering accommodation. Children can
enjoy rare breed pigs, cows, geese, ducks, and chickens.
