Helena Thompson Museum
(See also Workington and Workington Hall)
The Helena Thompson Museum was built in the 18th
century as a private home (known as Park End house) and is now a museum. The home was bequeathed
by Miss Helena Thompson in 1940, thus the name. In the museum is a model of Workington Hall
(across the road) as it was before it became ruinous.
Women and children's dresses and needlework from
the 18th to 20th centuries are part of the museum's attractions. Also on
display in the museum are pottery, jewellery, silver, glass, and furniture dating from Georgian,
Regency and Victorian times. One section of the museum relates the social and industrial history
of Workington: shipbuilding, pottery, brick-making, coal-mining, and the railway and steel
industries were part of the mix.
