Kendal Museum
(See also Kendal and Abbot Hall Art Gallery)
Kendal's first Museum
collection was put together in 1796 by William Todhunter and contained fossils, plants, minerals,
animals, and antiques. The present Museum is based on that collection and was opened after World
War I in a former wool warehouse opposite the railway station.
The development of the Kendal area from prehistoric to modern times is charted at
the Museum. The historic and archaeological gallery covers prehistoric, Viking, and medieval
times with a display on Kendal Castle. There is a Natural History Gallery detailing the Lake
District's geology. Another part of this gallery contains a series of dioramas that look at
Lakeland habitats. There is a large collection of Lakeland flora and fauna.
The World Wildlife Gallery gives an introduction to the animals, insect life, and
environment of the continents. It highlights wildlife conservation issues.
An outdoor wildlife garden provides pond, marsh, and meadow habitats for flying
and crawling insects.
