Solway Aviation Museum
(See also Crosby-on-Eden)
The Solway Aviation
Museum is run by volunteers from the Solway Aviation Society. Its theme is that of British
Military Aircraft manufactured in the North West of England between the 1950's and 1960's.
The first aircraft acquired by the museum was an Armstrong Whitworth built Hawker
Hart Trainer, recovered from a barn at the Nelson Thomlinson School in Wigton Cumbria. The next
plane to join the group was a Vampire Jet Trainer. Following this acquisition other planes
included an Armstrong Whitworth Meteor, a Vulcan bomber, a Lightning, a Canberra, and another
Vampire.
Blue Streak parts and equipment are on display in the new
Blue Streak room. New for 2002 is the Crosby Room with past and present details of the history of
the civilian life of Carlisle Airport over many years. There are displays on the fire section and
a life size copy of the control tower desk, along with the history of the various flight schools
that have operated from the airport. In the summer of 2002 the museum opens in the new Aviation
Heritage Centre.
The museum is located at the Aviation Heritage Centre, Carlisle Airport,
Crosby-on-Eden, Carlisle, CA6 4NW.
