The Beacon
(See also Whitehaven , Haig Colliery Mining Museum and The Rum Story)
The Beacon, overlooking Whitehaven's
harbour, tells the history of the town and its harbour.
AV presentations tell the story of coal mining and shipbuilding, the influential
Lowther family, local smuggling, and the geology and archaeology of the area. Details of the
importance of these industries are presented along with artifacts.
An interactive Weather Gallery sits on the top floor. Here forecasting,
broadcasting, and monitoring are part of the activities. From this floor views of the town and
harbour can be enjoyed.
Changing events and exhibitions take place during the year.
