The Dock Museum
(See also Barrow-In-Furness and North and South Walney Nature Reserves)
The
Dock Museum, built over a Victorian graving dock (dry dock), presents an AV story of Barrow's
history from prehistoric times to the present and includes the details of its maritime heritage
and industrial growth. A special gallery houses changing exhibitions.
One of the permanent exhibits, Shipbuilders of the World, shows off ship models
and provides access to computer displays of photographs from the Vickers Photographic Archive.
The collection details the workings of the British Shipbuilding and Engineering Company with
thousands of photographs of the Barrow Yard workings and the ships they built.
The
museum also houses an art gallery, the pictures of which span more than 100 years. Interactive
films take visitors on a journey through the town's history. Second World War history, the
Furness Railway, iron mining, the Barrow steelworks, and a Victorian kitchen make up part of the
social history displays.
Local rock, mineral, fossil, seashell, bird and wild animal specimens are on
display. Archaeological artefacts include human and animal bones, burial urns, stone tools and
bronze items from Roman and medieval times.
The Dock Museum is located on North Road, Barrow-in-Furness.
