Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery
(See also Carlisle Castle , Carlisle and Carlisle
Cathedral)
The Tullie House Museum is one
of the best museums in England. You truly feel a part of every experience it offers, and
everything is presented in the highest quality imaginable. The Border Galleries allow you to
journey back in time to relive the dramatic history of Carlisle and the Borders area from
pre-history to the Iron Age to Roman times (including an exhibit on Hadrian's Wall and a Roman
street). The exhibit then moves to Late Roman, Dark Ages and medieval times. The siege and Civil
War are included in an AV and exhibition. There is a fascinating AV offering on the Border
Reivers that captures the horrors of these times.
Another section of the Museum
includes the social history of the area, while still another tells of the railway history of
Cumbria's north. Wildlife are not forgotten and have their own section. On another floor are an
art gallery with changing contemporary art exhibitions, a restaurant, and high quality shop.
On the grounds is the Old House and Gardens, a Georgian house that was the site
of the original museum. Now displayed there are the Gallery of Childhood, paintings, and
china.
