Cumbria and the Lake District The Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway
The Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway
(See also Lakeside, Haverthwaite)
The Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway was originally built
as a part of the Furness line which, in 1869 ran from Furness to Ulverston, to connect with the
steamers on Windermere. The line was first closed in 1967, then, in 1970, shortened to end at
Haverthwaite. Steam and diesel locomotives still ply a 3½-mile run to Lakeside from Haverthwaite
during tourist season. The line goes along the Levens valley beside the river Leven and through
the town of Newby Bridge. The trains link up with the Windermere steamers to provide a further
journey.
At the Haverthwaite end there is an engine shed with a
number of engines on show, a picnic area, and a tearoom/restaurant serving homemade scones and
local beef, and a souvenir shop. The railway holds special steam event weekends, one of which is
a steam gala. At Christmas time special Santa special weekends are offered. Victorian weekends
are offered in August.
