Rosehill Theatre

Theatre Stage courtesy Rosehill TheatreRosehill Theatre was the creation of Sir Nicholas Sekers, who emigrated from Hungary in 1937 and founded the West Cumberland Silk Mills at Hensingham, Whitehaven (later Sekers Fabrics Ltd). He bought the interior of the Royal Standard, Whitehaven's old music hall, but it was not usable for productions so was demolished to make room for the new theatre. However, painted panels removed from the old building are on display at Rosehill. The stainless steel griffons, installed in the Rosehill in 1998, flanking the portico entrance are a theme from the old Royal Standard. In 1965 Sekers was knighted for his services to the arts.

Rosehill Theatre Barn courtesy Rosehill TheatreThe interior of the theatre was designed by one of England's leading theatrical designers, Oliver Messel. Building work began in January 1959 and was completed in time for a grand opening on 3rd September. In 2009, Rosehill Theatre will celebrate its fiftieth anniversary. The theatre walls were originally lined with red silk and it was known as a “rose-red silk lined jewel box.” This material had to be replaced with new silk in 1997.

Next to the theatre, Rosehill Barn was opened in 1998 to use for rehearsals, performances, classes, exhibitions, weddings, seminars, conferences and other functions as well as a fortnightly folk club, a weekly theatre school, youth theatre rehearsals and meetings by art classes and WI groups.
