Banna Roman Fort

(See also Bewcastle and Bew Castle)

Situated north of Hadrian's Wall, Banna was built cAD79 as an outpost to help guard the approaches to the wall. It was abandoned around AD360. The fort was linked to Hadrian's Wall by a road to Birdoswald Roman Fort. An 11th century castle and a church were later built within the grounds.

The remains of buildings and graves attest to the strategic importance of the site for the Romans. Roman altars, pottery, coins, and other artefacts were unearthed here. The Romans mined lead and limestone in the adjacent countryside. An old road (the Maiden Way) was located in this area before the time of the Roman occupation.

Bewcastle is located 9 miles north of Brampton on a minor road off the B6318.
