Barbon
Barbon snuggles into Barbon dale,
home to many native trees and much birdlife. Barbon Beck runs through the small village to join
the river Lune. A short distance to the east is Dentdale.
In the 19th century the village was served by a rail line. Once busy,
Barbon saw much change in the 20th century with many of its businesses and public buildings closed. A 17th century
coaching inn survives to serve the inhabitants and visitors. Historic Barbon manor house was
built in the Italian style.
St Bartholomew church was built in 1893 in the Perpendicular style by Paley and
Austin. In the 1600s a chapel occupied the site, and the present church retains 17th
century carvings. The east window has an outstanding view of the fells.
An agricultural show and sheepdog trials are held annually in August.
