Boltongate

The rural hamlet of Boltongate sits on a hill looking down on the River Ellen. The view south of Skiddaw is one of the local attractions as is the stone vaulted nave of All Saints church. It is unusual in that it shows the influence of French work.

The late 14^th century building is made from ashlar blocks and has a stone parapeted roof. A bellcote faces eastwards from the gable. The north vestry of the church is original. There are four primitive heads holding up the font. The east window is in the Scottish style. Pevsner describes the church as "one of the architectural sensations of Cumberland".

Coal, lime and copper were once mined in the parish. Two manor houses, Bolton Park and Weary Hall, existed in the nearby countryside. Boltongate sits on the fringe of the Lake District.
