Bothel
(See also Bassenthwaite Lake)
Bothel, in Allerdale, provides Solway Firth views which, in medieval times,
allowed watchers to sight any enemy ships approaching. In clear weather the Scottish coast across
the firth is visible. The village is near Bassenthwaite Lake and is just outside the Lake
District National Park boundaries.
A gruesome village tale is that the Bothel beck turned red when Charles I was
beheaded. A Roman fort, Caer Mote, was built nearby. A free grammar school was established in the
1800s. The Greyhound Inn is the local pub. A village hall also serves the locals. There is a
village green.
