Crook village north-west of Kendal Cumbria
Crook
The village of Crook is strung
along the road between Bowness-on-Windermere and Kendal.
In the 1800's there were mills operating in the area. They manufactured bobbins
and worsted cloth. Farms date back as far as the 15th century.
A row of cottages, built in 1711, now serves as a village pub, The Sun. The
tradition began in horse and buggy days when local brew was served to travellers from one of the
doorways.
St Catherine's Church in the village was built in 1887, but
still retains a 14th century bell from an earlier church.
Near the village is the tower of what was the manor chapel for Crook Hall. It
served the people from the 16th to the end of the 19th century.
Crook is a pleasant stop between two busy towns.
