Gleaston
(See also Gleaston Castle and Gleaston Water Mill)
Gleaston is a sprawling village dating from the 11th
century but with many of the dwellings 19th century in origin. Its original name was
Glasserton. There is a village green next to Gleaston beck which runs along one edge of the
village. The village has a hall, an old tithe barn, and several old cottages. A former pub is now
a private dwelling.
The village is noted for its castle ruins, now part of a farm, and a
watermill. Gleaston watermill is a working corn mill dating from the 1700s, but there has been a
mill here for 400 years.
