Great Crosthwaite

Great Crosswaithe lies across the River Greta on the western edge of Keswick and is considered a suburb of Keswick. It is not to be confused with the village of Crosswaithe, 5 miles west of Kendal. Located in the north lakes area, it looks up to Skiddaw and Lonscale Fell to the north and the water of Derwentwater on the southwest.

Its name comes from its being a place of worship since AD553--Crosswaithe means a “cross in a clearing”. The present St Kentigern church has existed on the site since before the 14th century.

St Kentigern's Feast Day is January 13^th.
