Lakeside village on southern tip of Lake Windermere Cumbria
Lakeside
(See also The Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway)
Just as its name suggests, the village of
Lakeside is at waters edge--in this case, Windermeres southern shore. Its a popular and busy spot
in the summer and a great place to have a snack and enjoy the views across the water. You can
catch a cruise boat from Waterhead or Bowness to Lakeside or hop aboard here to see the lake.
Ride the Lakeside and Haverthwaite railway for a
3½-mile journey that takes you to Newby Bridge and then finishes in Haverthwaite. This was once
part of the Ulverston and Barrow Furness rail line.
At Lakesides pier is the Aquarium of the Lakes, with 30 displays set up to follow a
river from its felltop beginning to its end in Morecambe Bay. Lake District murals, sound
effects, live fish, and an AV show enhance the experience.
Just north of Lakeside is Stott Park bobbin mill, an interesting English Heritage property, and
a bit of Lakeland history.
