Rusland
(See also Arthur Ransome)
Rusland, made up of farm houses and cottages, sits in a valley of the same name
between Windermere and Coniston Water. Even the rivers name, Rusland Pool, fits in. There are
many walks in the area.
Rusland Hall was built in Georgian times, then restored in 1845. Its been the
home of the Archibald family since the early 19th century. East of the hall is a two-storey stone
tannery, built in the mid-18th century.
The church of St Paul,
constructed in 1745 on an elevated site, was rebuilt in 1868, except for the west tower. The
stained glass east window of the church displays Biblical scenes while boards on both sides give
the ten commandments, the creed, and the Lords prayer. Author Arthur Ransome and his wife are
buried in the churchyard.
Woods surround the village. Here are the well-known
Rusland beeches. Planted as a hedge, they became decrepit with age and required tree surgery in
the 1990s. Also in the area is Rusland Moss, a Site of Special Scientific Interest. Hay Bridge
Nature Reserve is part of this SSSI.
