Skelton
Several minor roads run into the village of Skelton, and its houses follow
alongside, fanning out from the village green. It is most notable for the Church of St Michael
and All Angels, built on the site of a 13th century church.
The church, covered with blue slates, was repaired in 1794.
The present church was much repaired and altered in 1879. The 14th century square
stone tower with its two bells survives along with a wide nave of 1794, a monument of 1750 to
H.R. Brougham, and a pulpit and communion rail of the same period. The church windows have
rounded arches.
Nearby are Greystoke Forest and the historic home of
Hutton-in-the-Forest where the Skelton Horticultural and Agricultural Show is held on the
3rd Saturday in August.
