Skelwith Bridge village west of Ambleside Cumbria
Skelwith Bridge
(See also Wrynose
Pass , Skelwith Force and Ambleside)
Skelwith Bridge sits by the River Brathay near the Wrynose
Pass. A ford across the river was the impetus for the growth of the village. A few minutes walk
by footpath from the village leads to a 15-foot high waterfall, Skelwith Force. It's most
interesting to view after heavy rains when the water cascades down.
From the 19th century, slate was quarried in the
surrounding area. Over the years a number of different companies have run the business. Although
the slate is mainly used for roofing, it also finds its way into other products that include
flooring, paving, lintels, and signs. The Kirkstone Galleries, in a converted bobbin mill, sell
contemporary products for the home from around the world.
The Cumbria Way walk passes through Skelwith Bridge before heading up
to Elterwater. Walkers can stop in the village pub for refreshments.
