Holmrook
Holmrook, on the river Irt, is two miles north of Ravenglass. Fishing for sea trout and salmon is a popular local activity. The village has a pub and postoffice.
St Pauls church in the village has an Irish style 9th century cross. In the church are memorials to the family of Lewis Carroll, whose real name was Charles Lutwidge Dodgson.
Carleton Hall, Grade II listed, is a mile from the village. It featured in an episode of the TV show Hetty Wainthrop Investigates with star Patricia Routledge. Irton Hall, now home to self-catering cottages, was visited by Cromwell and Henry VI. In the grounds is a 1000-year-old oak tree. The hall is reputed to have two ghosts.Two miles away is the Cumbria Cycle Way.
