Ennerdale Lake view by Barbara BallardEnnerdale Bridge sits on the river Ehen just on the western edge of the Lake District. To the east is Ennerdale Water. The area is agricultural. In prehistoric times iron was smelted here, and centuries later haematite was mined in the valley. The weaving industry helped the village to grow.

Ennerdale Bridge village school by Barbara BallardSt Marys church, dated 1856-58, was constructed on the site of a medieval chapel. It was enlarged in 1885. Wordsworths poem, The Brothers is set in the churchyard. Wordsworth didnt like tourists and the poem begins

Ennerdale Bridge Shepherds Arms Hotel by Barbara BallardThe Shepherd Arms Hotel in the village serves real ale and is named in the Camra Good Pub guide. A pub, the Fox and Hounds, dates from the 18th century. There is a village school.

Ennerdale Bridge is on Wainwrights coast to coast walk.
