Low Wood
(See also Backbarrow , John Wilkinson)
Low Wood is a tiny hamlet of stone houses along the roadside with the river Leven running nearby. The stone houses were originally workers' cottages for the local iron and gunpowder works that functioned in the 1700s. Other buildings from the iron works still exist. A mill on the river provided power for industry.
