Nether Wasdale

(See also Wasdale , Wast Water)

Nether Wasdale Village and Fells courtesy of Graeme Dougal Nether Wasdale (its other name is Strands) lies in Wasdale near the river Irt. Its white stone cottages line the roadside. On the village green are two hotels, the Strand and the Screes Hotel, named after Wast Water's screes. A maypole and 1856 drinking trough highlight the green.

Dating from the 16th century St Michael's and All Angels church, formerly a chapelry of St Bee's priory, is bright and white inside. On the wall are a Nether Wasdale St Michael All Angels church courtesy of Graeme Dougal George III coat of arms and original wall inscriptions. 17th century oak panelling, the lectern and the pulpit carvings came from York Minster. The altar rails are Jacobean. The church is lit with gas.

Woodland covers the countryside around Nether Wasdale.
