The Beacon Museum

(See also Whitehaven)

The beacon museum by Pam GrantThe Beacon, overlooking Whitehaven's harbour, tells the history of the town and its harbour.

AV presentations tell the story of coal mining and shipbuilding, the influential Lowther family, local smuggling, and the geology and archaeology of the area. Details of the importance of these industries are presented along with artifacts.

An interactive Weather Gallery sits on the top floor. Here forecasting, broadcasting, and monitoring are part of the activities. From this floor views of the town and harbour can be enjoyed.

Changing events and exhibitions take place during the year.

The Beacon Museum is now closed for an exciting redisplay, incorporating the history of the nuclear industry in Copeland. We will reopen to the public at the end of May. If you are a school interested in having one of our activity sessions or loan boxes, these are still available. Call us for details. When we reopen we will continue to offer easy access, guided tours, room hire, group bookings, gallery exhibitions, events and activities. We even have educational services, and groups and clubs.

Note: Please check opening times and dates before visiting in case of changes.
