Towns and Villages of Cumbria

Burnbanks

Burnbanks village green by Oliver DixonBurnbanks was built for the Haweswater reservoir workers during its construction. At its head is the Mardale valley, flooded to build the reservoir to service Manchester. The valley, along with its church, homes, and inn, were purposely drowned.

Before being flooded the land served agricultural needs in the form of dairy cattle and sheep. New housing and renovated housing has since been built in the area creating a “new” Burnbanks.Burnbanks new housing by Ron Shirt
