Towns and Villages of Cumbria

Ormathwaite

Ormathwaite footpath to Keswick by Oliver Dixon geograph.org.ukOrmathwaite, a tiny hamlet in Allerdale, is overshadowed by Skiddaw.

William Brownrigg (1711-1800), who lived at Ormathwaite Hall, an 18th century Grade II listed house in the Georgian style, was a doctor and scientist. He experimented with mine gas, making salt, and the effects of oil poured on water. The famous American Benjamin Franklin visited him. Ormathwaite Hall later became the home of an artist, Joseph Wilkinson. It is now a holiday home noted for its gardens and trees.
